A great little book |
|
Just finished reading Matter 3 and wanted to share with other readers how much I enjoyed it. Theres something here for everyone - from Toby Litts darkly comic story about Foxes, to Lily Dunns menacing tale of domestic road rage, Matter is a really great read. It also looks good - colourful and small enough to fit into your pocket, the short extracts, poems and stories in this collection are a great way to pass the time on your way to work.

Perfectly pink |
This is a perfect little book. Everything about it, from its stunning pink colour, its handbag size, not to mention the brilliant writing and the innovative, witty design. I think every bookshelf should have one. If you are a fan of short fiction this is the place to see some of the best, from new unknowns to bigger names like Michel Faber and Ali Smith. I also love the poetry and the quirky conversations on a bus - it seems like editors Pedder and Money had a lot of fun putting this together. Now I have the bright and sunny issue no.1, with Leigh Moneys extraordinary tale about a backward boy called Mona, and the shocking pink of No.2 with Jason Starmers brilliant depiction of a young boy drowning, and I cant wait to see what delights will be unveiled in issue No.3. Bring it on!

A Treat of a Read. |
This is a lovely little book - like a box of delicious chocolates rather than a four course meal - yet leaves you feeling very satisfied. It is a collection of short stories, poems, excerpts from plays, written by new writers and a few established ones. All this is interspersed with strange but evocative quotations from overheard conversations. There is no particular theme to the collection but this does not give Matter a fragmented feel. Perhaps the editors have taken subtle care to create a different kind of cohesion because it really does work both as a single entity and as a collection of very different writings and writers. The mix of poetry, drama and fiction gave me a sense of entering the unknown as I began each piece. A little book full of lovely surprises. As I said - a lovely box of delicious chocolates to dip into whenever you feel like it.And the design of the book - the lucious pink cover, the tasty typeface, the sweet size, all make this book a perfect gift for a stocking at Christmas as you can relax and dip into it, with less guilt than a real chocolate box but its just as delicious. It also makes you think...
